What Is a Will?

What is a Will explained

A will is a legal document that explains what should happen to your money, property, and personal belongings after you die. It also allows you to name someone you trust to carry out your wishes.

Without a will, the court—not you—decides how your estate is handled.

What a Will Does

A will allows you to:

  • Name who inherits your assets
  • Choose an executor to manage your estate
  • Name guardians for minor children
  • Reduce confusion and disputes among family

What a Will Does Not Do

A will does not automatically avoid probate, and it does not control assets with named beneficiaries, such as life insurance or retirement accounts.

Why Having a Will Matters

Having a will gives your family clarity at a difficult time. Even a simple will is better than no will at all.
